Jeff Baker, ND,  DHANP,  CCH and Susie Baker, RSHom. (NA), CCH are the founders and co-directors of the Maui Academy of homeopathy (MAH).  Jeff and Susie practice on the island of Maui, have been married for 35 years and have three children,  Sahana, Josha and Toshi.

Jeff began studying homeopathy in the 1970’s, while a student attending National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon.  In the 1980’s, while practicing in Santa Rosa, California, Jeff studied extensively with the well-known Greek homeopath, George Vithoulkas.  Although Susie shared a great interest in homeopathy, the awesome responsibilities of raising three children did not allow her to begin practicing until the early 90’s. 

Moving to Maui from Sonoma County, California, in 1989, gave Jeff the much-needed opportunity to reduce his patient load and objectively examine the ebb and flow of practice.  One thing that became more and more clear was the inconsistency of results.  Oftentimes seemingly brilliant prescriptions turned out to be brilliant failures, but there were still the successes, enough of them to encourage him to work hard, delve deeper and continue to examine his approach.  In 1991, a friend, Louis Klein, gave Jeff a book entitled Spirit of Homeopathy by Rajan Sankaran.  Although the concepts expressed in that book were somewhat rudimentary, they inspired Jeff to rethink the course he was on.

In 1993, Jeff attended a course for foreigners in Bombay, India, taught by Rajan Sankaran, Jayesh Shah and the other members of the “Bombay School.”  This marked the beginning of a long journey of exploration, inquiry and rededication.  Although the road was rocky at times, a new course was charted, which has resulted in a much deeper understanding of what does and does not work in homeopathic practice. 

The impulse for starting a homeopathic academy on Maui was born in 1990 out of a desire to continue to expand homeopathic horizons, while living on the most remotely habitable landmass on the planet, the Hawaiian Islands.  For the first three years Roger Morrison, Nancy Herrick and Louis Klein were the main lecturers at the annual seminars, along with Jeff.  In 1994 Jayesh Shah, Rajan Sankaran’s closest colleague and collaborator, accepted an invitation to present an extensive series of lectures, demonstrating the work that he and his group were doing in India.  The seminar was so well received that it proved to be the first in a long continuing collaboration between Jayesh and the academy. 

As the years went by it became clearer that in order to make the teaching more accessible to many more homeopaths it made sense to move the seminars to where the preponderance of the practitioners live:  Mainland North America. From 1998-2005 several extensive ongoing series of five-day seminars (29 in all) were presented in Berkeley, Boston, New York City, San Diego and Brattleboro, Vermont. Those seminars were taught by Jayesh Shah, Rajan Sankaran's closest colleague and collaborator. Beginning in 2004 video courses on Rajan Sankaran's vital sensation system were presented in collaboration with Jeff in Boston, Phoenix, Portland, OR, Berkeley and Vancouver, BC. In all, the Maui Academy of Homeopathy has presented advanced seminars and courses to over 700 homeopaths across North America.
